How Long Does a Mailed Check Payment Take?
In this guide
If you’re on this page, it sounds like you may need to pay a bill in a hurry!
Don’t worry, we’ve got your back.
First of all, it’s worth nothing that a check payment typically has 3 stages: 1) physical delivery of the check to the payee; 2) the check actually clearing into their bank account; 3) the payee posting it to your account so the invoice is cleared.
Faster shipping will shorten the first step. It cannot control the other two, so keep an eye on those.
As of October 2026 at time of publication, here are your best options:
| Service | Published delivery time | Best for: |
|---|---|---|
| USPS First Class Mail | 1 to 5 business days. The USPS estimate is not guaranteed. | A routine payment when you’re not in a rush |
| USPS Priority Mail | 2 to 3 business days for most U.S. destinations. The USPS service standard is not guaranteed. Longer ranges apply to some territories and remote destinations. | When you want a faster service than First Class’s 5 day outer limit |
| FedEx Express Saver | 3 business days. FedEx lists delivery by the third business day. | A time-sensitive payment but one that is not due tomorrow |
| FedEx 2Day | 2 business days. FedEx lists delivery by the second business day. | When it’s more urgent |
| FedEx Standard Overnight | Next business day, generally by 3 p.m. to most areas. Check FedEx service details for your destination and drop-off cutoff. | When it’s super urgent! |
| UPS Ground | 1 to 5 business days. UPS lists this range for U.S. deliveries. | Similar to USPS First Class |
| UPS 3 Day Select | 3 business days to the contiguous 48 states. See UPS domestic services. | Similar to USPS Priority |
| UPS 2nd Day Air | 2 business days. See UPS domestic services. | Similar to FedEx 2Day |
All these are estimates from the delivery companies. Always check their estimates for your specific destination and timing.
